nsnbc : Turkey on Friday started shelling the Syrian – Kurdish town of Afrin in Syrian Kurdistan. The town is held by the U.S.-backed Syrian – Kurdish People’s protection Units which Ankara insits is a terrorist organization allied and on par with Turkey’s outlawed Kurdistan Worker’s Party.

The Turkish government has repeatedly threatened that a full-scale operation against Syrian – Kurdish towns controlled by the People’s Protection Units (YPG) including Afrin, is imminent after the U.S. said it was training a 30,000 strong border force there.
Turkey’s Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli told Haber television: “The Afrin operation will take place. … The presence of all the terror lines in northern Syria will be removed. There’s no other way out.”
Turkish troops fired on several YPG targets in Afrin to prevent the formation of what Ankara describes as a “terror corridor” on the border. nsnbc has not yet received a statement from the YPG.
However, nsnbc international editor-in-chief Christof Lehmann commented:
“If there is anything that has facilitated the establishment of the often-mentioned Kurdish Corridor, it is Turkey’s own participation in the destabilization of Syria and to some degree Iraq with Islamist terrorist organizations and militia. Had Turkey and its Gulf Arab and NATO allies not launched a de-facto war on Syria in 2011 nobody would, in 2018, be discussing a 60,000 strong YPG/YPJ in Rojava today. However, it is a fact that this did happen and it will result in a bloodbath and yet another Turkish-led genocide if Turkey is allowed to get away with invading traditionally Syrian – Kurdish areas and to fill the void with Turkmen and Islamist proxies. If Turkey insists, it will have its nose as bloodied as Syria, and one might want to thank R. Tayyip Erdogan for that situation”.
So far there is no full-scale invasion. Turkish army howitzers in the frontier Hatay province reportedly launched at least 10 rounds of artillery fire, targeting the “terror nests of the terror organisation in Afrin. A military convoy of 20 buses carrying so-called “Syrian opposition” rebels backed by Ankara also crossed over into Syria.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had reacted with fury to the announcement of the US-backed border force on Syria’s northern frontier with Turkey, denouncing it as an “army of terror”. The Pentagon said it does not plan to create an “army” and that the force is aimed at fighters from the Islamic State group and maintaining stability in areas recaptured from the jihadists.
