Turkey supports Bahraini dictatorship

Sheikh Rashid paid an official visit to Turkey as the head of a Bahraini delegation on May 9.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul welcomed the Bahraini delegation at the Cankaya Presidential Palace.

The Bahraini interior minister claimed during the meeting with Abdullah Gul that Manama will continue to implement reforms.

“Bahrain has been able, thanks to its wise leadership, to overcome the crisis and present a bold leading model in tackling issues by taking effective steps that earned international appreciation and projected the kingdom’s real image,” Sheikh Rashid claimed.

The recent visit by a Bahraini delegation to Turkey comes at a time when Manama forces continue their violent crackdown on peaceful anti-government demonstrations.

On May 11, Bahraini police attacked anti-regime protesters in several towns and villages near Manama. The demonstrators were calling for the downfall of the Al Khalifa regime and the release of jailed opposition activists.

Meanwhile, the Turkish president received the Bahraini delegation despite the fact that Ankara has remained silent on the developments in neighboring Syria and the May 7 parliamentary elections which were part of reforms promised by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

In addition, Turkey has not issued any condemnation of the two bomb attacks carried out in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on May 10 that killed 55 people, including civilians and army members.

Over the past few months, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have voiced their support for providing weaponry to the armed groups fighting against the Syrian government.
