Turkey’s decision to remove Darwinist evolution from curricula is divine idiocy: Lehmann

Fahwad Al-Khadoumi (nsnbc) : Alparslan Durmus, head of Turkey’s national board on education, said in an online statement earlier this week that a chapter entitled “Beginning of Life and Evolution” will be deleted from the standard biology textbooks and the material will be available only, to students who go on to university studies from age 18 – 19.

The decision is consistent with a trend towards the “Islamization” of Turkey under the government of the Islamist, Muslim Brotherhood-linked Justice and Development Party (AKP).

Critics, including atheists, secularists as well as moderate Muslims, stress that the decision is further undermining the secular foundations of the Turkish Republic as well as the quality of education afforded to students in the country. However, Durmus defended the decision, stating:

“We are aware that if our students don’t have the background to comprehend the premises and hypothesis, or if they don’t have the knowledge and scientific framework, they will not be able to understand some controversial issues, so we have left them out.”

Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtelmus has earlier described Darwinian evolutionary theory as an “old and rotten” theory that doesn’t necessarily have to be tought. The changes are part of a new curriculum that will go into effect at the start of the 2017 – 18 academic year, said Durmus, who added that it was “based on Turkish values”.

Improving ignorance by naivety?

Durmus’ statement displays a fundamental lack of logic, said nsnbc international editor-in-chief Christof Lehmann in a telephone conversation Saturday morning. He added:

“What Durmus states translates into – students could possibly lack the information that is required to form an opinion, that is why we shall keep them naive instead of educating them; That’s exactly the kind of completely illogical rubbish that one would expect from religious zealots; I’m not surprised, after all, endorsing an all powerful, invisible tyrant is probably  more consistent with the Turkish values Durmus invokes than educating students in critical analysis and reasoning”.

Lehmann added that Durmus’ statement contains a second logical fallacy. He added:

“Durmus claims that Darwinian theory, that is a theory that can be tested and falsified, will be removed because students don’t have the background to comprehend the premises and hypothesis, or because they don’t have the knowledge and scientific framework; And yet, indoctrinating students about the existence of an alleged god who has been constructed in such a manner that his existence cannot be proven or disproven is, according to Durmus, perfectly acceptable and very, very Turkish. That’s exactly the type of divine idiocy one would expect from someone who wants to substitute education with indoctrination”.
