Turkey’s meddling policy in Syria backfires

Alwaght- Turkey has witnessed a spate of attacks in recent months with the capital Ankara being the latest site of a bombing that killed 28 people and injured 61 others.

Striking the heart of the country and particularly with an explosion that was timed to detonate as military buses were passing by signals Turkey’s failure in intelligence.

Opposition parties have blamed the country’s security agencies for falling short of preventing the bloodbath.

CHP Deputy Parliamentary Group Chair Özgür Özel referred to intelligence deficiencies.

“In the heart of the country, in Ankara, if bombs explode in front of buses transporting military personnel, if the public rallies of political parties are unprotected, then it shows that the way this government is ruling this country – particularly its deficiency in collecting intelligence – should be immediately questioned,” Özel told reporters at a press conference.

The Turkish government has refused to assume responsibility with no news of officials resigning against the backdrop of these security breaches. Instead, it is blaming the attack solely on its perpetrators denying the crucial role its foreign policy is playing to trigger such acts of violence.

In a statement condemning the bloody incident, Erdogan said: “Our determination to retaliate to these attacks, in Turkey and abroad, which aim at our unity, togetherness and future, is increasing with such actions.”

What President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has dismissed is his country’s role in fuelling regional attacks with the wave of bombings suggesting that Turkey’s intervention in Syrian affairs is backfiring.

Turkey has been meddling in the Syrian crisis that broke out in 2011 by funding and backing terrorist groups and even allowing tens of thousands of militants to infiltrate Syrian territory through its border. It has also launched a war of words against Syrian President Bashar Assad and taken political stances against Damascus. Militarily, Ankara is allegedly getting ready to send ground troops as part of joint ground operations with the Saudi regime. Turkish troops are also cracking down on the Kurds in the northern parts of Syria, who are battling against extremist groups.

Yet not only is it a cause that provoked these repercussions, but Ankara has also been taking advantage of the increase in violence to justify its policy towards Syria and Kurds.

However, it is in fact the other way around.

Turkish-based Kurdistan Freedom Hawks group has claimed responsibility for the latest attack on its website. The TAK explicitly said the bombing was carried out in retaliation of Erdogan’s policies.

Turkey’s persistence to corner Syria and engage in a political feud with the Syrian government in a way that clearly amounts to interference to achieve its own purposes has prompted a violent chain reaction that is backfiring in Turkey’s internal security arena.

The government’s meddling in the Syrian war in addition to the logistical support it provides for terrorist groups have been the driving reason behind such a rise in terrorist attacks across Turkey. Many believe that it is the Turkish people who are paying a hefty price for the mistakes of their government.
