Turnbull warns of increased Terrorism Threat in the Region: Ignores State Sponsorship

Christof Lehmann (nsnbc) : In response to the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull instructed law enforcement agencies to test their preparedness for mass casualty attacks. Like his European and American counterparts, Turnbull avoided necessary and painful questions about Western, Turkish and Gulf Arab State sponsorship of terrorism and failure to hit terrorist infrastructure at its roots.

Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull stressed that attacks similar to the recent attacks carried out by the self-proclaimed Islamic State, a.k.a. ISIS, ISIL or Daesh in Paris could happen anywhere and that Australian law enforcement agencies should redouble their domestic and regional counter-terrorism efforts.

Ironically, Turnbull would note that the people should grieve and be angry at the recent attacks but that grief and anger must not be allowed to cloud judgement. Turnbull added that the response to terrorism must be clear-eyed, strategic and determined. The Australian PM would also add that this was not the time for “machismo” responses, but that responses rather should be calm, professional and effective.

The Australian Federal Police and ASIO advised Turnbull that there was no evidence that the recent attacks in the French capital Paris would materially affect the threat levels in Australia, but that police is constantly evaluating evolving threat levels.

ASIO and the Australian Federal Police had advised him there was no evidence that the recent attacks, include Paris, would materially affect the threat levels in Australia “but we are constantly on watch for any evolving or emerging threats”.

Neither ASIO nor Turnbull, however, have openly addressed that fact that at the very least Turkey, the United States or elements within governmental structures in the United States, as well as Saudi Arabia overtly have supported ISIS.

In December 2012 Saudi Arabia began reactivating smuggling routes from Saudi Arabia via Iraq’s Al-Anbar province and to ISIS / ISIL brigades in Deir Ez-Zor, Syria.

In April 2013 U.S. Senator John McCain illegally crossed the Turkish – Syrian border. McCain held a meeting with several “rebel” leaders in a safe house in Idlib.

Among them were the general of the now virtually defunct Free Syrian Army, Salim Idris, and Abu Bakhr al-Bagdhadi, a.k.a. al-Badri and most recently as ISIS’ Caliph Ibrahim.

When a photo of the meeting was leaked, McCain would claim that he was not aware that al-Baghdadi was present. McCain’s claim is inconsistent with even the most basic guidelines on the protection of diplomats and envoys.

On April 22, 2013 the European Union lifted its embargo on the import of Syrian oil from “rebel-held territories”. ISIS has established a pipeline of tanker trucks from Syria’s oil-rich Deir Ez-Zor (Deit Ez-Zour) province to the Kurdish administrated northern Iraq. From there, the oil was sold to Turkey and beyond.

Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz would admit that Turkey is transporting oil from the Kurdish administrated region of Northern Iraq via Turkey, while the Kurdish government described Turkey as reliable partner in that regard. In fact, the export of northern Iraqi oil via Turkey has almost doubled in 2014 and increased to 400,000 barrels per day.

In June 2014 a source close to former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri disclosed that the final decision to launch the invasion of Iraq with ISIS fell on the sidelines of the Atlantic Council Summit in Turkey, in November 2013. The invasion via Syria and Turkey was to be supervised at the US Embassy in Turkey, by Ambassador Riccardione.

Neither ASIO nor Turnbull addressed the fact that ISIS could long have been defeated, was it not for the fact that Australia and its “partners” are, at the very least ignorant, and eventually knowingly ignorant about the overt, covert, direct or indirect State sponsorship of ISIS. Other questions Turnbull failed to address include how it is possible that almost all of those involved in the Paris attacks were known to French and other European police and intelligence services, and the disturbing fact that almost non of the “alleged” perpetrators were apprehended alive.
