THREE Rottnest beaches have been closed after two five-metre sharks were spotted by the Westpac Surf Life Saving WA helicopter.

hesA Department of Fisheries spokesman said a Surf Lifesaving WA chopper had sighted two “large white sharks” about 1.20pm approximately 200 metres offshore south of Battery Point on Rottnest Island.

A Rottnest Island Authority spokeswoman said three beaches had been closed – Salmon Bay, Green Island and Strickland Bay – while the shark was being monitored.

The sighting follows the fatal mauling of 32-year-old George Thomas Wainwright at Rottnest Island, 500 metres northwest of Little Armstrong Bay on October 22.

Earlier this month, 64-year-old businessman Bryn Martin disappeared while swimming at Cottesloe Beach and is a suspected shark attack victim.
