nsnbc : The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump prolonged the state of emergency, first imposed in 1995, declaring the risk posed by drug traffickers from Colombia as an extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy and economy of the United States of America.

The state of emergency allows Washington to free up funds to protect threatened interests from actors that can cause an extreme level of violence, corruption, and harm in the United States and abroad. The emergency status was prolonged on Tuesday.
Ironically, Washington and U.S. media tend to associate Colombian cocaine with the now disarmed, demobilized FARC-EP. The guerrilla demobilized, disarmed and has now constituted a legal political party using the acronym FARC.
A realistic assessment, however, shows that right-wing neo-paramilitaries including the AGC (a.k.a. Los Urabenos) stand for about 80 percent of Colombia’s export of Cocaine – with the U.S.A. leading worldwide in Cocaine consumption.
Earlier this year President Trump warned Colombia over an increase in cocaine production in 2017, which includes refined cocaine as well as “paste”, a precursor substance to refined cocaine as well as crack cocaine.
Coca production in Colombia has increased in recent years ahead of and after signing the peace accord between the Colombian State and the FARC-EP. The FARC’s main revenue from cocaine came previously from imposing a tax of approximately 10 percent on traffickers who crossed FARC-EP controlled territory.
The demobilization and disarmament of the FARC-EP after the signing of the peace accord led to an influx of right-wing neo-paramilitaries and criminal gangs into previously FARC-EP controlled territory. The increase prior to the peace accord was in part prompted by the same factors and in part by coca farmers who increased coca crop plantation in an attempt to benefit more from the illicit crop substitution program that is part of the peace accord.
