Ugandan forces capture LRA rebel: Army

Ugandan soldiers have captured a fugitive member of African militant group Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) and freed 10 hostages, the army says.

Ugandan army spokesman Paddy Ankunda said on Tuesday that LRA officer Charles Okello was taken into custody in the southeast of the Central African Republic (CAR).

Ankunda described Okello as a field commander of the “notorious” LRA, saying, “Most importantly we released 10 people, seven children and three women, who had been held hostage for six months.”

The Ugandan army has been leading an African Union force tasked with capturing the LRA’s members, some of whom are wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.

The LRA is said to have split up into small groups and its fugitive leader, Joseph Kony, is thought to be hiding in a place where the borders of the CAR, South Sudan, and Sudan meet.

On February 11, the Invisible Children and The Resolve, developers of the LRA Crisis Tracker project, said chaos in the CAR has “allowed the LRA to operate with little resistance” in some parts of the country, which could be a “lifeline” for Kony.

In its long and bloody history, the LRA has mutilated civilians and abducted children to use as sex slaves, soldiers, and porters.
