UK FM threatens Yemen dissidents

Hague told the international Friends of Yemen group conference in London that this is a “clear warning” to Yemeni dissidents if they launch any attempt to disrupt next year’s parliamentary for presidential election in the Middle Eastern country next year.

“Yemen matters to the UK and it matters to the international community. The international community cannot afford to let Yemen’s transition falter,” he said.

The Yemeni government has been facing questions of legitimacy ever since the February 27, 2012 single-candidate elections in which the US and British-backed Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi replaced Yemeni dictator Abdullah Saleh as president.

Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi was Saleh’s vice president and was picked as the presidential candidate after the dictator accepted a US-backed power transfer deal to end his 33-year grip to power and get immunity from his western allies.

Many Yemenis believe the power-transfer was a cover-up by the west and some regional countries to marginalize the revolution, which forced Saleh to step down.

Yemenis voiced their outrage at the status quo on Thursday with a protest in the capital Sana’a that called for trial of Saleh.

The protesters also called on the Friends of Yemen conference to find a way to recover money stolen by Saleh and his family rather than making offers of $7.9 billion in aid to their government.
