UK gender admissions gap widens

According to the research by the Independent Commission on Fees, the rise in university tuition fees last September, from £3,290 to up to £9,000 a year, deterred more boys from the poorest families from studying for degrees.

The commission said higher tuition fees are creating a “worrying gender gap” among university applicants.

The report also revealed that students from the poorest fifth of neighbourhoods are ten times less likely than students from the richest fifth of neighbourhoods to go to one of the country’s most selective universities.

“This government has made it much harder for people to consider university and it is worrying that the number of boys from the poorest backgrounds going to university has fallen,” said Sally Hunt, general secretary of the University and College Union (UCU).

Hunt said individuals should apply for universities based on their talents, adding that backgrounds and costs of studying “should not be holding them back.”
