UK Labour MPs urge ban on EDL march

The EDL have announced they would march in the east London borough on August 24 and Labour MPs want the police to prevent their rally following bans in 2011 and 2012.

“In 2011 we successfully campaigned with local people in the borough and across London in coalition with Hope not Hate, to secure a ban on the EDL to march through Tower Hamlets,” Rushanara Ali, Labour MP for Bethnal Green and Bow, said.

Another Labour MP, Jim Fitzpatrick also said he will do “all [he] can” to prevent the march, which is part of the EDL’s summer campaign that also includes rallies in Birmingham, Oxford, Newcastle, Dudley, Exeter and Slough.

Their call has been echoed by Labour candidate for Mayor of Tower Hamlets and current London Assembly Member John Biggs who said the racist group only want “to cause disorder and to try to provoke division … They have no place here”.

EDL marches feature racist anti-Islam chanting and banners with violence an almost indispensable part of their rallies.

This comes as the King’s College London found in a study back in March that the EDL are exploiting concerns around recent sex-grooming gangs in the north of England to promote its Islamophobic attitudes and pretend that the religion is linked with crime.

So far, the Home Office has refused to impose a blanket ban on all EDL hate preaching, despite their violent record.
