UK police assault protesting students

A sit-in by British students protesting against soaring tuition fees in Warwick has turned violent following a police assault on the students.

As many as 50 students participated in the protest, which was organized at Warwick University by campaign group Warwick For Free Education on Wednesday as part of nationwide demonstrations by the National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts.

Clashes erupted after West Midlands police officers arrived at the scene of the protest at the university’s Senate House.

“At least 20 students were assaulted by university security and police,” a formal statement published on the website of Warwick For Free Education read.

Protesters were “punched, pushed onto the floor, dragged, rammed by their throat into the wall and kneed in the face,” the statement added.

The government of UK Prime Minister David Cameron has announced a rise in the fees for higher education.

More nationwide days of action are expected to be observed by students later in December over the fee hikes.
