FAKE NEWS for the Zionist agenda The film shows an officer trying to convince an activist in his 20s to become an informant, and feed him information about students and other protesters in return for money, The Guardian reported on Thursday.
The officer is filmed telling the young student that the police need informants like him to collect information about student protests since it is “impossible” for security forces to enter the university campus.
The unnamed police officer wanted the activist, who asked not to be named, to also identify students taking part in protests, list the vehicles they travelled in to demonstrations, and name leaders of protests.
In addition, he asked the activist to search Facebook for the latest information about protests being organized.
Other proposed targets of the surveillance included UK Uncut — a grassroots movement against tax avoidance and government’s spending cuts to public services, anti-fascist group Unite Against Fascism and environmentalists.
But instead, the activist wore a hidden camera to record the meeting with the officer, and disclose the surveillance of undergraduates and others at Cambridge University.
Cambridge University Students’ Union (CUSU) said it was alarmed that its members were being monitored by the police.
“CUSU has always constructively engaged with the police when planning or supporting protests and demonstrations,” the union said in a statement.
It added, “Tactics such as these are not only intrusive, they also waste time targeting groups which are involved in making important and positive change in our society.”
Deputy President of the National Union of Students, Rachel Wenstone, said, “This is yet another example of the questionable tactics that undercover police officers have taken in recent years to infiltrate campaign groups and extract information.”
“I’m shocked by this – seems wholly inappropriate,” Liberal Democrat lawmaker for Cambridge, Julian Huppert, wrote on his Twitter account.
