UK teachers union mulls strike action

The teachers union of the UK is mulling over fresh strike action should its talks with the government fall short of results.

The National Union of Teachers (NUT) is meeting for its annual conference on Saturday. It is slated to talk the possibility of industrial action next term unless “significant progress” is made in talks with the government.

On the list of grievances are such items as performance-related pay due to be introduced from September, heavy workloads, and pensions.

“We have a motion that’s going to be put to delegates which envisages industrial action in late June if we don’t make progress in the talks with the Government in May,” said NUT general secretary, Christine Blower.

“But the first priority is for a minister to actually come to those talks and we’d like to make progress on a list of things.”

NUT members walked out across England and Wales on March 26 in a row over pay, pensions, and work conditions.

Tens of thousands of British teachers took part in a one-day national strike on the day, calling on the government to halt dismantling of the national pay system, stop plans to introduce longer school days and years, and scrap proposals that force teachers to work longer and get less in payment and pension.

The NUT members said they had no option other than taking industrial action because the Education Secretary Michael Gove has so far refused to negotiate with them.
