Ukraine expells 13 Russian diplomats “in response to cynical chemical attack in Salisbury”

nsnbc : Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said in response to what he described as a cynical chemical attack in Salisbury, the Ukraine, in coordination with the European Union (EU), has decided to expel 13 Russian diplomats.

Petro Proroshenko, Ukraine, Mar 26, 2018President Petro Poroshenko used his Facebook account to make the announcement, saying: “In response to a cynical chemical attack in Salisbury (the United Kingdom), Ukraine, in the spirit of solidarity with our British partners and transatlantic allies and in coordination with the EU countries, has decided to expel from Ukrainian territory 13 Russian diplomats of the few that still stay [in Ukraine]. As we know, our diplomatic relations with Russia are de facto frozen,” he wrote.

Poroshenko alleges that Russia, though the poisoning of its former intelligence officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Britain, “once again has confirmed its contemptuous attitude not only to the sovereignty of independent states, but also to the value of human life”. “Ukraine feels it every day in the occupied Ukrainian Crimea and in Donbas,” Poroshenko said. Poroshenko or the Ukrainian government have, like other officials who have made claims and counterclaims, not yet provided any independently verifiable evidence to the press.

However, Poroshenko would add that it was important “not to be limited to symbolic gestures”, and that “The next step is to increase the price for Moscow for committed international crimes, including by strengthening personal, financial and economic sanctions.”  According to Poroshenko, “our joint response to the Kremlin should continue to be decisive and tough in order to prevent new human tragedies and ensure respect for international law.”

Russian officials and policymakers have criticized the United States and European Union’s decision to expel diplomats instead of cooperating on an investigation of the incident via the appropriate channels such as the OPCW.
