Up to 92% of children abducted by Israeli forces suffered ill-treatment

About 92 per cent of the Palestinian children suffered violent treatment when they were abducted by Israeli occupation forces, NGO revealed on Tuesday.

The Military Court Watch (MCW) said in a report that “as of October 2017, 92 per cent of children continue to report being hand tied upon arrest generally with plastic zip ties behind the back.”

It continued: “This is often described as ‘painful’ or ‘very tight and painful.’”

According to the NGO, which is specialised in monitoring the treatment of Palestinian children in Israeli military detention, this marked a reduction by 2 per cent as 94 per cent of the children had the same experience in 2016.

“Some children report that they remained tied during interrogation and all children continue to be shackled by the ankles during military court appearances,” the report said.

“In 64 per cent of cases the evidence indicates non-compliance with the military’s own standard operating procedures for the use of hand restraints introduced in 2010 following [Israeli] High Court intervention,” the report added.

It stated that “the 2010 regulations require, inter alia, hands to be restrained to the front with three hand ties avoiding ‘suffering as much as possible.’”

The report cited the 2013 UNICEF paper which recommended that children should only be “restrained for the time that is strictly necessary without unnecessary pain or suffering.”
