US Embassy staff in Russia barred access to Moscow recreational facility and warehouse

nsnbc : Russia, on Tuesday, blocked access to a U.S. Embassy recreational facility in a Moscow suburb and closed down a 2,000 square meter warehouse in an industrial area. The move came after Moscow asked Washington to cuts its embassy staff in Russia by 755.

Russia_Moscow_US embassy recreational facility_(archives)The barring of access to the two facilities is Moscow’s latest move in a diplomatic row over US-imposed sanctions against Russia. Moscow has already ordered Washington to cut its embassy staff in the Russian Federation with 755.

Causing additional tensions was that Moscow apparently barred access to the two facilities before August 1, the official date set to close down the facilities. U.S. Embassy spokeswoman Maria Olson complained they had not been allowed access to the site for two days.

However, Moscow – according to Russian State media – is of the opinion that the Americans themselves were to blame for not acquiring the requisite permits to access the property. The official added that blaming Russia for blocking access amounted to a “pre-meditated provocation.”

At the end of 2016, the White House under former President Barack Obama expelled 35 Russian diplomats from the U.S. and closed two Russian diplomatic recreational facilities as a response to alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Barring access to the recreational facility is, in so many words, what Russian President Putin describes as appropriate countermeasure against US sanctions.
