US publishes Russian New Generation Warfare Handbook, Moscow alarmed

nsnbc : The United States have published a new military handbook entitled Russian New Generation Warfare Handbook, describing Russia’s hybrid warfare strategy. Moscow states that it is “alarmed”. Meanwhile, the United States has previously published a military circular in which it states, unequivocally, that the US will, for the foreseeable future, primarily engage in irregular warfare. The two self-anointed permanent UN Security Council members may indeed have much more in common than either of them cares to admit.

US Army_Russian assymetric warfare_Russia_Ukraine_USAThe Russian Embassy in the United States said it is alarmed by the U.S. Army’s new warfare handbook on countering Russian forces, said an embassy spokesman on Tuesday. The “Russian New Generation Warfare Handbook” spells out Russian forces’ capabilities and calls for an immediate improvement of the United States’ capacities to counter the threat. It focuses on tactics and strategies Russia employs in Ukraine, such as hybrid warfare and the use of proxy forces, in addition to conventional forces.

Russian Embassy spokesman Nikolai Lakhonin noted that the U.S. Army’s handbook “imagines the possibility of military clashes between U.S. and Russian armed forces.” “This can only be imagined in a terrible delirium!” he claimed in comments on the embassy’s Facebook page. “This evidence of training the U.S. troops for direct conflict with Russia looks very alarming, especially in the current and already difficult situation in European security.”

Frants Klintsevich, deputy head of the State Duma Defense Committee, called the handbook “useless.” “They are unable to fight the Russians in military and technical terms or in moral and psychological training,” Klintsevich said over the weekend. The U.S. Army handbook attempts to identify blindspots within its training priorities, highlighting the need to “outthink our opponent and capitalize on his weaknesses.”

The Asymmetric Warfare Group, a U.S. Army unit tasked with advisory support, drafted the handbook in December 2016 and the Public Intelligence research project published its unclassified version on September 18. (HERE).

After having reviewed the document, nsnbc international editor-in-chief Christof Lehmann said “I’m not surprised at the fact that Klintsevich would try to ridicule the handbook, it is after all a very realistic – and sobering – assessment of Russia’s capabilities and strategies. The assessment is consistent with our observations at nsnbc international”.

“What I could find amusing, if it were not for the fact that we are speaking of war, war crimes, illegal military actions and lives, is that the United States Army, in 2010, published Training Circular TC 18-01, in which it admits that the US, for the foreseeable future, would primarily engage in irregular warfare,” Lehmann said. (LINK o TC 18-01) “The strategies described in TC 18-01 are very similar to those described in the new handbook on Russia; the two self-anointed global cops and permanent UN Security Council members Russia and USA have so much more in common than they would care to admit,” Lehmann concluded.
