US purchase of heavy water to ease doubts about trade with Iran: Spokesman

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Behrouz Kamalvandi said the US honoring of commitment to buying heavy water from Iran will clear up the other customers’ doubts about making such purchases.

Speaking to reporters in Tehran on Friday, Kamalvandi said Washington’s purchase of 32 tons of heavy water from Iran in the wake of a lasting nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers is significant in the political, technical and legal terms since the US itself sought closure of Iran’s nuclear facilities.

While Iran is in talks with the other countries on the sale of heavy water, he added, Washington’s move to finalize the purchase will clear up doubts about trade with Tehran.

Kamalvandi then added that Iran has urged the US to give a series of commitments to the heavy water deal, saying that the guarantees are fortunately being met and the processes are being put into practice.

His comments came after AEOI Chief Ali Akbar Salehi said given Washington’s unreliable conduct and seizure of Iran’s assets, Tehran will not deliver the cargo of heavy water unless it is guaranteed the US will pay the money in full.

The US has agreed to buy 32 tons of heavy water from Iran under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a nuclear deal between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) which allows Iran to sell its enriched uranium material — called UF6 — and to buy natural uranium or “yellow cake” in return.
