US senator arrested for drunk driving

On early Sunday in a Washington DC suburb, Crapo was detained after running a red light and failing several field sobriety tests.

“I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter. I will also undertake measures to ensure that this circumstance is never repeated,” the Republican senator said.

Crapo was released on a USD 1,000 bond and is due to be in court on January 4, 2013.

His blood alcohol content registered at 0.11 percent, exceeding the maximum 0.08.

Crapo, who is a Mormon in faith, has at various times said he abstains from drinking alcohol.

The Mormon Church forbids followers from drinking alcohol, as well as caffeine and other mind-altering substances.

It was expected that Crapo would take over the top Republican spot on the Senate Banking Committee.

The senator was elected to the Senate in 1998 after representing the state of Idaho for six years in the House of Representatives.

He is also a member of the “Gang of Eight” which is a group of Senators who worked in 2011 toward a deficit-reduction deal to avoid the “fiscal cliff”, which Congress failed to adopt.
