US senators to push new Iran sanctions

Robert Menendez, (D-N.J.), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, urged the Senate leaders to push for additional sanctions as an “insurance policy” over the next six months as the interim deal between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany, is implemented.

“I hope the deal can be successful,” Menendez said on CBS’s Face the Nation on Sunday. “But we need to be ready to move forward.”

No action is likely in Congress for at least another week as the Senate is recessed until December 9.

The White House had cautioned against adding sanctions as nuclear talks were conducted in Geneva, Switzerland last month.

As part of the interim deal reached on November 24, Tehran agreed to limit some parts of its nuclear energy program for six months in exchange for partial easing of sanctions imposed against the country by the US and its allies. Congressional hawks remain uneasy about the agreement.

Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) said on Sunday he was “very discouraged.”

“Not a single centrifuge being dismantled,” he said on the same show. “As long as they can enrich [uranium], it seems to be that we are violating the very standards that we set in place,” he added.

Earlier this month, Corker introduced a bill that would limit the Obama administration’s ability to ease sanctions against Iran.

President Barack Obama has defended the Geneva deal and asked Congress not to “close the door on diplomacy” by passing bills that would impose new sanction against Iran.
