US, South Korea conduct war games

The United States and South Korea are conducting their largest-ever annual joint military exercises amid increased tension with North Korea.

The ‘Max Thunder’ began on Friday and will last until April 25 and it involves 103 aircraft and 1,400 service personnel.

“The combined air forces will strengthen their battle readiness under the current situation when tension rises over the Korean peninsula,” a South Korean air force statement said.

“In numerical terms, it’s the largest exercise of its kind that we’ve done,” a South Korean air force spokesman.

South Korea air force has sent some 50 fighter jets such as F- 15k, KF-16 and E-737 along with around 50 US warplanes including F-15, F-16s, FA-18, EA-18 and AWACS.

The drills come at a time when North Korea announced it would be conducting military drills of its own.

Pyongyang sees the joint military drills as provocative and a preparation of war against the country.

There has been a long history of animosity between North Korea and the United States.

The US and South Korea hold the joint military exercises each year.

There are around 30,000 US troops permanently stationed in South Korea.
