‘US students college costs increasing’

The annual study published by Sallie Mae, the country’s largest private student lender, said that undergraduates covered 30 percent of the burden of paying for college in the past academic year — the largest share in four years.

According to the survey, the undergraduates paid an average of USD 2,555 to their colleges in the last academic year, up from USD 1,944 the previous year.

“They broke the piggy bank to meet those tuition obligations” immediately after the recession, said Sarah Ducich, senior vice president for public policy at Sallie Mae.

It added that American families also cut college spending by 5 percent in the 2011-12 academic year due to the worsening economic conditions in the country.

Parents spent an average USD 5,955 on college from their income and savings, down from USD 6,664 a year earlier and USD 8,752 the year before, the study showed.

“They’re narrowing their choices as they go through,” Ducich said. “We’re seeing an increased consideration of cost all the way through.”
