US wildfires force hundreds to evacuate

A wildfire that has already destroyed at least 17 structures continues to threaten over 500 more in the Sierra Nevada foothills east of Sacramento, California fire officials said Sunday.

The fire began Friday after a vehicle went into dry vegetation east of Highway 5, five miles north of Plymouth in Amador County, CalFire officials said on their website.

It has grown about 4,000 acres since its start and is 50 percent contained. About 1,900 firefighters were battling the blaze, CalFire said.

The fire, known as the Sand Fire, is burning near vineyards in the region, according to The Associated Press.

More than 500 homeowners were under evacuation orders as a result of the fire, The AP reported.

There will be no change in the weather pattern through early this week, which means it will stay hot and dry with highs in the upper 90s and low humidity, AccuWeather Meteorologist Mike Doll said.

“One bit of good news for fire crews is that winds will generally be light and under 15 mph,” Doll said.

A separate blaze, the El Portal fire, in the Yosemite National Park has consumed at least 2,600 acres with 0 percent containment and forced the evacuations around Foresta, California, ABC30 in Fresno reported. Accuweather.com
