Volcano erupts in Kamchatka in Russia’s far east: People urged to stay indoors

nsnbc : People in the Kamchatka region in Russia’s far east have been urged not to leave their homes and to stay indoors after a volcanic eruption began spewing waves of ash into the air.

Shiveluch volcano_Kamchatka_RussiaFollowing the eruption of the Shiveluch volcano, schools and kindergartens in the village of Kluchi were closed when the village and region was showered in volcanic ash. The regions of Kozyrevsk and Mayskoye in the Ust-Kamchatsky district are also affected.

Thursday morning the Shiveluch volcano erupted and threw a plume of ash some 12 kilometers above sea level. The volcano, which experts believe is between 60,000 to 70,000 years old, stands at 3,283 meters tall.

The decision to call on people to stay indoors was made because of acute and long-term health concerns. Volcanic ash has a high content of ultra-fine glass particles. Inhalation can lead to acute respiratory probles and in extreme cases failure.

Once inhaled into the lung, it can take a long time for the body to rid itself of the ash. Long-term exposure can also lead to secondary illnesses including bone deformations.

Schools and kidergartens in Kluchi were closed, but final-year students sitting their national exams were still forces to complete the test with the majority of the students having gauze bandages and other improvised respiratory aides wrapped around their face while they “quite dutifully” made their way to the campus. How many of them hoped they could be granted the same privilege as their fellow in kiddy-class isn’t known.

Alexander Voznikov, the head of the village council, told reporters that large amounts of volcanic ash began falling Thursday morning. He said “Everything went dark. It was as if night suddenly had fallen”. Local firefighters ill be tasked with clearing the ash from village streets once the ash-fall stops, he added.
