Walmart workers planning fresh protests

Workers at America’s largest private employer, Walmart, and their supporters in the trade union are planning fresh protests over their wages and working conditions in 20 US cities.

The strikes are scheduled to begin Friday, less than a week before Walmart investors are gathering in Bentonville, Arkansas for the retailer’s annual shareholders meeting, Business Insider reported Friday.

Workers are also planning to target the firm’s family-friendly ethic.

Hundreds of the so-called ‘Walmart moms’ will also travel to the company’s home state, Arkansas for rallies there. These mothers who work at stores across the United States are fighting for higher pay, better benefits and more fulltime work opportunities.

The actions come after a series of Black Friday protests last year, which occurred after a House of Representatives committee report found that taxpayers were subsidizing workers at just one Walmart store for $1 million a year in food stamps and other public-assistance programs, because of the low wages they took home.

‘Our Walmart’ is asking Walmart to pay workers at least $25,000 annually, or $13 an hour. The group claims that most employees make less than $9 per hour, an estimate based on data from IBISWorld and Glassdoor.com. Walmart claims the figure to be $11.83.

Workers and activists are also protesting what they call retaliation against workers who speak out against the company.

The company has been under increasing criticism over its treatment of staff, and is expected to face close scrutiny from shareholders. It made $16 billion in profit last year.

The Walton family owns more than half of Walmart worth almost $145 billion. Walmart has 825,000 workers. Around two-thirds of its workforce are paid less than $25,000 a year.
