Ashrawi: When it comes to Jewish terrorism, the legal system in Israel falls apart

PLO Executive Committee Member Dr. Hanan Ashrawi strongly denounced Israel’s failure to prosecute the suspects behind the deliberate burning and killing of the Dawabsheh family and said, “We are not asking Israel to extra-judicially execute the suspects, to demolish their homes, to deport them, to place them under administrative detention, or to revoke their IDs.

We only wanted justice to be served on behalf of the Dawabsheh family; on July 31, one-and-a-half year-old Palestinian baby Ali Dawabsheh and his parents Saad and Reham were burned and killed and his 4-year-old brother Ahmad was seriously injured when their home in the village of Duma was firebombed by Jewish extremists.”

When it comes to Jewish criminality or terrorism against Palestinian victims, the legal system in Israel seems to fall apart.  According to the Israeli human rights group Yesh Din, Israeli police closed 85.3 percent of investigations due to the failure “to locate suspects or find sufficient evidence to indict suspects”; only 1.9 percent of Palestinian complaints against Israeli civilian/settler attacks resulted in a conviction, and 7.4 percent of investigations generated indictments against suspects.

Moreover, a Yesh Din report published this month found that in the past five years, only 3 percent of the criminal investigations launched by the Military Police Criminal Investigations Division into alleged offenses by Israeli soldiers against Palestinians resulted in the indictment of suspects.

Dr. Ashrawi continued, “The attacks and crimes committed by extremist Jewish settlers and members of the Israeli army are the direct result of Israel’s culture of hate, violence and exclusion, as well as the dehumanization of the Palestinian victims.

Israeli policies are designed to shield the illegal settler population and the army of occupation from any kind of judicial accountability and to provide them with full impunity at the expense of the Palestinian people who are brutalized and terrorized on a daily basis.  If Israel’s military courts have a 99.7% conviction rate for Palestinians, Israel should be able to maintain such a rate of conviction for its own citizens!

We call on members of the international community to put pressure on Israel to cease and desist from such a distortion of the legal system and from adopting such double standards that deliberately devalue the lives and rights of the Palestinian people under occupation.  It is imperative that Israel discloses the circumstances surrounding the torching of Ali, Saad and Reham Dawabsheh and the serious injury of Ahmad who still remains in the hospital.  Israel’s continued travesty of justice must end, and Israel and its illegal settlers must be held accountable both individually and collectively for their criminal acts against the Palestinian people.”
