World must confront terrorists: UN

The new UN special envoy for Syria says the international community must confront terrorist groups operating in the troubled region.

Staffan de Mistura said on Thursday that terrorist groups pose a threat to the Middle East and elsewhere.

“The terrorist groups need to be confronted and that’s clear,” the senior UN official told a press conference in the Syrian capital, Damascus.

He made the comments after meeting with Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad on his first trip to the Arab county.

The envoy referred to a UN resolution which calls for action against militant groups like the ISIL.

On August 15, the UN Security Council adopted the resolution, asking “all member states to take national measures to suppress the flow of foreign terrorist fighters” into Iraq and Syria.

Also on Wednesday, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said fighting terrorism should be an international priority. In a meeting with visiting de Mistura, Moallem said that the international community needs to prioritize battling terror and use all of its resources in accordance with the recent UN resolution.

De Mistura has also insisted that a political solution is only way to solve the ongoing crisis in Syria.

De Mistura arrived in Damascus on Tuesday in his first visit to the country since he was appointed to the post. He replaced Lakhdar Brahimi, who resigned on May 31 after nearly two years of failed efforts to end the war.

Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since 2011.

The Western powers and their regional allies — especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey — are reportedly supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
