In 2014 Bill Gates provided funding for a birth control microchip implant that can be turned on or off remotely. The implant, which is put under the skin of the buttocks, upper arm or abdomen, is wirelessly programmed to release drugs inside a woman’s body.
Originally an MIT project, Daré Bioscience acquired the technology in 2019 and announced they planned to begin trial testing it in 2020. Microchips Biotech joined Daré; Gates has pumped $17.9 million into it so far, Microchips Biotech said. The device can work for 16 years. Press releases did not say who or what would remotely control it.
