You’re Black? Not In My Neighborhood!

If it wasn’t on camera you wouldn’t believe it. The narrative is synonymous with something taken from a pre civil rights area; white’s only drinking fountains and the like. If you thought racism is dead in America, you’d be wrong.

The two gentlemen that recorded the incident released the video after being stopped at a traffic stop for literally being too black for the neighborhood. The cop pulled them over to see what they were up to; a clear violation of the Fourth Amendment (the right to security against unreasonable search and seizure).

The man driving the vehicle explained to the officer that he owned property in the area, and was observing the surrounding market for property value. Already an illegal traffic stop, the cop decided that it was best to add insult to injury. Instead of letting the two men go on their way, he insisted that he follow them to the property to ‘prove’ their innocence…They had still yet to be accused of any crime or given any explanation as to why they were pulled over.

It is important to note that at this point the driver should have exercised his right to remain silent and politely ask if he were free to leave. Luckily, the incident did not escalate.

The men led the officer to his home, seemingly only a few blocks away from the traffic stop, validating the driver’s story of owning property in the area.

As the men walked up to the door to open it, the man filming heckled the cop a bit about being able to afford the property that these young black men couldn’t possibly afford themselves – according to the cop’s reason for pulling them over. Even as the man was opening the door, the officer stood idly by as if the key wouldn’t open the lock.

The best part of the video occurred when the men invited the officer inside to view the five bedroom, three bathroom home and he refused. This of course being antithetical to typical cop behavior of barging into homes uninvited and without a warrant. As the men laughed and ridiculed the cop for his obviously ridiculous mistake, the cop walked off with his injured pride.

This is a clear case of racial profiling and illegal/immoral tactics by American police. Not only did the cop not have any sort of ‘probable cause’ for the traffic stop, he continued to violate these men’s rights by treating them as if they were already guilty without ever having even been accused of committing a crime – simply, in my opinion, for being black.

The identity of this dirty cop is unclear from the video and I was unable to obtain an interview from either of the men. However, one of the men in the video (Steven Jumper) states on his Facebook profile that he lives in Eden, North Carolina, presumably local to the police department in which the cop works.
