Zarif: Enemies Disappointed by Iranians’ High-Turnout in Elections

Addressing a gathering of Iranian expatiates living in New Zealand on Sunday, Zarif highlighted the country’s victories in the July 2015 nuclear deal with six world powers and the recent elections, saying that the Iranian people are “real heroes” on all stages.

“The people’s resistance and vigilance demonstrated that no Iranian national should be threatened because they deserve reverence and gratitude,” he noted.

Iranians disappointed ill-wishers with their high-turnout in the polls and showed to the world that if they want to interact with the Islamic Republic, they should opt for cooperation and negotiation.

Countrywide parliamentary and Assembly of Experts elections were held in Iran on February 26.

More than 60 percent of some 55 million eligible voters cast their ballots at around 53,000 polling stations across the country.

Heading a high-ranking delegation, Zarif arrived in the New Zealand capital of Wellington on Saturday on the fifth leg of his tour of Southeast Asian and Oceanian countries.

Zarif’s 11-day tour, which took him to Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, Thailand and New Zealand, will go on with another visit to Australia.

The visits come against the backdrop of a new wave of interest in ties with Iran after the country’s negotiating team, headed by Zarif, and representatives of the Group 5+1 on July 14, 2015 reached a conclusion over the text of a comprehensive 159-page deal on Tehran’s nuclear program.

The two sides started implementing the nuclear agreement on January 16.

The comprehensive nuclear deal, known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), terminated all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran.

Experts believe that Iran’s economic growth would rise remarkably after the final nuclear deal takes effect.
