A shooting incident in the Back of the Yards neighborhood in Chicago left a 14-year-old girl dead and another 16-year-old wounded on Monday.
The first girl was shot in the back and then pronounced dead at a hospital, while the other one was shot in the arm and hospitalized, Police News Affairs Officer Thomas Sweeney said.
Investigations are underway as detectives are questioning a person of interest in connection with the fatal incident.
Endia Martin, the slain girl, was going home when a girl from another school approached her, according to her stepfather Kent Kennedy. A confrontation broke out before the shooting which involved a group of teenagers, he said, adding that apparently, a person in the group had a weapon and opened fire, shooting the two victims.
The girl’s family said that the argument that led to her death may have originated on Facebook. “They had words and she gunned our daughter down,” Kennedy said. “For what? What reason would another girl gun down another child?”
Kennedy complained about lack of safety for young people who are dying easily these days in the city. “It’s senseless,” Kennedy said. “Kids are dying so young nowadays. It’s senseless. Parents shouldn’t have to bury no child.”
“No place in Chicago is safe for teenagers nowadays,” he said. “No place is safe.”
The two girls were among at least seven people who were shot in the city late Monday and Tuesday morning.
Chicago is one of the most dangerous cities in the US with very high gun deaths. According to FBI crime statistics released in late 2013, the city registered more homicides in 2012 than New York City.
