Witnesses say the casualties occurred when some 4,000 people took part in the rally to demand the closure of a factory that polluted some rural water resources. They say the military shot the victim when angry clashes erupted with police.
At least 15 others are also said to have been hurt and were shifted to a nearby hospital for necessary medical treatment.
There are fears of more casualties as witnesses say the troops opened fire on a group of protesters who were running away.
Angry protesters also hurled rocks at the security forces and clashed with them.
Military spokesman Brig. Ruwan Wanigasooriya has denied using live ammunition during clashes
Wanigasooriya said the troops did not aim their guns at the demonstrators but shot in the air to disperse them. Wanigasooriya added that “people with other agendas” were behind the demonstrators and had armed them with firearms and petrol bombs.
Activists have accused the Sri Lankan government of reacting sharply to protest rallies since defeating Tamil Tiger rebels in May 2009, ending a nearly three-decade civil war.
