Thousands of homeless and vulnerable people in Britain are expected to use emergency refuge centres over the Christmas period, a charity has warned.
The charity Crisis said it predicted some 4,000 people, including rough sleepers, to visit its centres across the country during the festive season.
The figure shows an increase of 18 percent when compared with data from the previous year.
The charity blamed the rise in its Christmas shelter visits on unemployment, benefit cuts, high rents and lack of affordable housing.
“We have a generation being shut out. With almost a million young unemployed, low wages and benefit cuts, this age group is at particular risk,” said Crisis chief executive Leslie Morphy.
The charity also warned that young Britons are most at risk, as the number of under-25s sleeping on the streets in the capital city of London has more than doubled over the last three years.
Moreover, it was found that at least 8 percent of those aged between 16 and 24 in England have experienced homelessness since 2008.
Earlier this month, a report by Crisis and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) showed that homelessness in the UK has been rising for three years in a row under the twin pressures of housing shortages and government cuts to benefits.
The research also revealed that an estimated 185,000 people a year are affected by homelessness in England.
