The blast took place at about 3:00 p.m. local time (1000 GMT) inside Bahadur Khan Women University in the Baruri area of Quetta, situated 690 kilometers (428 miles) southwest of Islamabad, on Saturday.
“It was an improvised explosive device placed in the women’s university bus,” city police chief Zubair Mahmood said, adding that at least 22 people were also injured in the attack.
The bomb exploded after the girl students had boarded, and the bus was leaving the university.
Eyewitnesses said the bus was completely destroyed in the blast, and a fire broke out following the explosion.
The bodies of the deceased and injured women were shifted to the Bolan Medical Complex. Hospital sources said several of the injured women were in critical condition.
Police cordoned off the site after the blast, and launched an investigation. No group has claimed responsibility for the act of violence so far.
Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has issued a statement strongly condemning the bomb attack.
He ordered medical personnel to provide the best medical treatment to the blast victims.
Quetta, the capital of Pakistan’s Baluchistan Province, has seen an upsurge in violence recently, and is suffering from a fresh spate of militancy, sectarian violence and Taliban attacks.
Thousands of Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since October 2001, when Pakistan joined an alliance with the United States in its so-called war on terror.
Since late 2009, there has been an upswing in militant attacks in Pakistan and thousands more have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
