In addition to the 13 dead, 5 family members on board were rescued and were transferred to a nearby hospital, Kafr al Sheikh Governor Al Sayed Nasr was quoted by Youm7.

The ferryboat captain and his assistant were arrested, Interior Ministry source told Youm7 Thursday.

The cause of the accident remains unknown; meanwhile security sources suggest it has been caused by bad weather, according to Youm7.

The accident marks one of many Nile River transport accidents that occur in Egypt each year due to lax regulations and law enforcement.

In July, a ferryboat sank in the Nile in Giza’s district of Al Warraq leaving 15 passengers dead, while six injured passengers were rescued, the Interior Ministry said.
