14th meeting of Chemical Weapons Convention SPs in Asia kicks off

Following the arrangements made between Iran’s Secretariat of National Authority of the Chemical Weapons Convention and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, the 14th meeting of National Authorities of State Parties in Asia is being held in Tehran from 23 to 25 May 2016.

This regional meeting of National Authorities hosted by Iran aims to consolidate the country’s active role in the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and its successful run is expected to promote Iran’s position among other state parties to the Convention.

54 representatives from 25 Asian countries are participating in the meeting where important issues in the national implementation of the CWC will be discussed.

The meeting will also serve as a forum in which representatives of National Authorities can confer with each other and with Secretariat staff in order to identify what further steps, if any, each participating state party needs to take in order to implement its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention.

The program for the meeting includes 1) a review of the current status of the implementation of the Convention and new approaches and initiatives related thereto; 2) a review of recent developments and updates in relation to the implementation of Article VI of the Convention; 3) an assessment and identification of priorities for effective national implementation of the Convention; and 4) bilateral meetings with Secretariat staff.

The regional meeting of National Authorities will be preceded by a regional meeting on education and outreach on 23 and 24 May 2016.
