2 Taliban leaders seized in Afghanistan

“The Afghan security forces and coalition forces today captured a Taliban commander during an operation in the Zharay district of Kandahar Province,” NATO said in a statement released on Thursday.

The statement did not reveal the identity of the captured leader. However, it stated that he was “responsible for coordinating militants between Pakistan and Kandahar, as well as recruiting new members and their supply with arms and ammunition for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.”

Separately, Afghan and foreign forces captured another local Taliban leader in the Washir district of Helmand Province on Thursday.

He was wanted for a series of attacks against Afghan and US-led troops throughout the district.

Meanwhile, Afghan police have killed four Taliban militants and captured 28 others in a series of operations across the country over the past 24 hours.

Afghan Interior Ministry in a statement announced that the operations took place in the southern provinces of Helmand, Kandahar and Zabul as well as the eastern provinces of Nangarhar and Laghman.

The statement added that a variety of munitions, including 17 assault rifles guns and 19 anti-personnel and anti-vehicle mines, were also recovered from the militants’ possession.

Insecurity continues to rise across Afghanistan despite the presence of some 130,000 US-led forces in the war-battered Asian country.
