Pedicab ride in New York City |
(Scroll down for video) A tourist in New York was charged $442 for a short Pedicab ride sparking an investigation by officials, according to reports.
Even in the age of the $500 hotel room and $18 cocktails, the charge of $442 a Texas family paid for a ride on a tricycle in New York has been much talked about.
The exorbitant fee sparked headlines in the media during the summer, and since then, authorities have been pushing for a simplified pricing structure so that tourists should not be scammed.
Even operators of Pedicabs, essentially an adult tricycle with a padded seat that can carry three passengers, admit that such publicity has given them all a bad name.
“It was not good for us,” Souleymane Touré said. “Because every time someone stops by us they say, ‘Are you going to charge us $400?'”
Pedicab operators can charge whatever they want, as long as their prices are published on the side of the cabin. But the prices quoted are based on a formula that is often confusing, for example, an initial charge of $5, and $1 or $2 per short block, $3, $4 or $5 per longer block. Not all signs clearly
state that the charges are per rider. A loop through Central Park can be $40, $50 or more per passenger.
That’s what led to the $442, Councilman Dan Garodnick said during a hearing on the issue last week.
The driver told the couple from Texas after 14-block ride that there was a $100 fee for each additional passenger, despite the daughters, who were sitting on the lap of their parents were 7 and 9. It was technically illegal to have four passengers, but a trip for three people normally costs $80 to $100.
