Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas

(Scroll down for video) Abbas this week said that he has given up on the Palestinian right of return issue, according to a recent interview.

The declaration of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in an interview with Israeli TV on Saturday mainly triggered protests in the Gaza Strip, ruled by the Islamist Hamas movement.

Hundreds of Hamas supporters took to the streets of Gaza on Saturday, chanted slogans against Abbas and in support of the Palestinian right of return, and set fire to Abbas’ images.

“I am a Palestinian refugee from Safad now a city in northern Israel. I would love to visit there, but I

do not want to live there.

All we want is to establish an independent Palestinian state in the territories occupied by Israel in 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital,” Abbas said in an interview Friday.

Hamas and other factions, including figures and leaders of the Fatah party of Palestinian President Abbas criticized the statement, and considered it a new concession to Israel that deprive Palestinian refugees in the Palestinian territories and worldwide of their right to return to their homes in Israel.
