24 Relationship Comics That Bring New Light To The Meaning Of Love

Relationships, undoubtedly, have their highs and lows, their bouts of tedium and their spurts of excitement. They are beautiful for this very reason, but they require balance in order to sustain. Relationships are a constant journey of self-discovery, hopefully comprising a deep-rooted love that has no boundaries. Then there’s love — the driving force that connects two souls to form a relationship. But it’s hard to define it so easily. In the words of Rumi, “Explanation by the tongue makes most things clear, but love unexplained is clearer.”

Love is a grandiose thing, but that which makes it up isn’t always so. And while the big moments are entirely important, sometimes it’s the small stuff which goes unnoticed that can truly show just how meaningful the connection of two people on such a profound level can truly be.

Philippa Rice is a U.K.-based artist and illustrator who, like Rumi, realizes that sometimes love cannot be communicated through robust sentences or immense actions. Sometimes love is little, too. Rice took note of how the day-to-day life of love can be just as powerful as the bigger picture itself by capturing the world she lives in with her boyfriend, fellow comic artist and illustrator Luke Pearson, in a comic series called “Soppy,” which was also published in her book Soppy: A Love Story. Of the contents of the book Rice says, “Everything that happens in the book is real. I didn’t want to make anything up, because I didn’t want Luke to read it and think, ‘Well, that’s not true.’ I wanted Luke to like it, more than anything. But a lot of people have been saying, ‘This is what I do. You’re watching me. You’re a clone of me!’ It makes you feel that lots of people are just the same. I guess we’re all normal.” While Rice’s initial goal wasn’t to uncover the small side of love and relationships, she unknowingly captivated audiences with this very thought.

How do you draw love? Sometimes our minds go to a surfaced place filled with hearts and roses, and monumental moments like first kisses and weddings. But this series of comics presents a refreshing take that exposes the everyday events from morning routines to trying to figure out what’s for dinner, showing a far different, and far more domestic, side of things.

The beauty of this comic is how few words are needed for us to understand these minuscule yet meaningful occasions. The response from people far and wide proves that this everyday world of Rice and her significant other is extremely universal.

Take a look at the below 24 comics and see how they can be interpreted into a love you have or have had. You might be surprised by how many ring true to you, and even more intrigued by the depth of love exposed that you might have overlooked.
