Mohammad Ajmal Kasab |
(Scroll down for video) The government of India announced that it has executed the Mumbai terrorist by hanging, according to news media reports.
Mohammad Ajmal Kasab, the only militant who survived the attacks of 2008, in Mumbai, was hanged, the Interior Ministry said on Wednesday.
In August, the Supreme Court of India upheld the death sentence on Kasab for attacking a series of targets in Mumbai that killed 166 people. Kasab was a Pakistani.
“Ajmal Kasab was executed at 7:30 this morning,” Interior Ministry spokesman K.S. Dhatwalia said.
The execution in the Yerawada prison in Pune, near Mumbai, came hours after President Pranab Mukherjee rejected a request for mercy by Kasab, who had said he belonged to the militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba.
It was the first capital sentence carried out in India since 2004.
Many foreigners, including some business people of India and poor train travelers were killed by 10
Pakistani gunmen in a three-day rampage through some of Mumbai’s best known landmarks including
two luxury hotels and a Jewish center belonging the Chabad Lubavitch.
Kasab was recorded walking through the main railway station of Mumbai carrying an AK-47 assault rifle and a backpack on his back. About 60 people were shot dead in the crowded station.
India accused Pakistan-based militants of organizing the attacks, saying Islamabad fails to act against those responsible for the attacks. Pakistan denies involvement and says it is prosecuting seven suspected militants for their involvement.
