Raymond Buys in a hospital

A teen boy away for some fun at a camp died of starvation, according to court proceedings.

The family of a 15-year-old boy, who died in April 2012, after a 10-week stay in a controversial game ranger training camp was banned from contacting his parents during his time there, the local newspaper reported this week.

15-year-old Raymond Buys was admitted to a hospital in Vereeniging, South Africa, with numerous physical injuries, including skull fractures. The teen died a month later.

The mother of Buys, Wilna Buys, testified in Vereeniging District Court on Monday against the owner of the camp, Alex de Koker, 49, and his employee, Michael Erasmus, 20.

The two men pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, child abuse, neglect, lack of proper clothing, food, housing facilities and two counts of assault.

Raymond was left at the center in January 2012 by his family.

According to his mother, Raymond was very excited to be training as a guard at the camp but the next time she saw him was on March 24 in the hospital.

“My son was a skeleton. He had head wounds and torn ears. There were bruises on his face and arms. He also had cigarette burns on his body,” she told the court.
