Ultra-Orthodox Jews studying Talmud |
Until now, if you were a deaf ultra-Orthodox Jew you would not be able to find a place where to study Torah, but now this has finally changed, according to press reports in Jerusalem, Israel.
If you are a religious man who happens to be deaf in Israel, the traditional doors of Jewish learning in many ways may be closed but one place is open just for you.
Yosef Tolidano, a young deaf man with a long and distinguished relationship with Sephardic rabbis opened those doors, making it possible for deaf people to study the Talmud, which is called the oral law of
Judaism.”
It has been eight months since Tolidano welcomed the first students into his new yeshiva, an institute for the advancement of the Talmud and rabbinic studies for the deaf, called Ma’aseh Nissim. Now, the yeshiva enrolled 15 young men and is growing monthly.
This is the first of its kind program that makes it possible for the deaf to take their rightful place among the more difficult levels of Jewish learning. The yeshiva is located in Jerusalem, Israel.
