This year, the swine flu has taken a large toll on the Palestinians in the Palestinian controlled West Bank.

Now, the first death in this season’s flu virus known as swine flu occurred in the Israeli city of Petah Tikva.

A 3-year-old died Monday at Schneider Children’s Medical Center after contracting the H1N1 virus that causes the disease, officials said.

The child had not received a vaccine to protect against the flu this year.

In the last week, at least four people have been admitted to hospitals while suffering from the same virus. All were identified as women and two are in critical condition, health officials said.

H1N1 is now a seasonal form of influenza in humans, and is included in the seasonal flu vaccine distributed each year in Israel.

The virus was originally called swine flu because the disease was similar to that found in pigs. It is transmitted from person to person through respiratory droplets, with symptoms typically lasting from four to six days.

Over half a million people worldwide died from the disease in the pandemic of 2009, mostly in Africa and Southeast Asia, according to the World Health Organization.
