Rickie Lee Fowler |
(Scroll down for video) A man was arrested, charged and convicted after he intentionally set off a large wildfire that killed several people in California, according to court proceedings in California.
Now, a judge issued a death sentence on Monday, for the violent offender convicted of setting a fire that destroyed more than 1,000 homes, charred the face of the San Bernardino Mountains and killed five people.
With his eyes fixed on the judge, Rickie Lee Fowler, 31, showed no emotion as the sentence was announced in a court in San Bernardino. Fowler, a methamphetamine user since elementary school, is already serving three life sentences for brutally sodomizing a fellow inmate in the county jail.
Judge Michael A. Smith called the evidence against Fowler, overwhelming, saying that there is no lingering doubt that he has caused the deadly forest fire while being in a rage after being kicked out from his apartment in Waterman Canyon.
Smith told the defendant that, despite his upbringing by an intolerable, abusive, drug-addicted mother, his unbroken history of violence and crime entitled him to little mercy.
“Rickie Fowler should be sentenced to death,” a jury had recommended, Smith told the court.
