3 Afghans Beat Swedish Football Player Unconscious as He Protected His Girlfriend

Three Middle Eastern men have been convicted by a Swedish court for beating a man unconscious after he attempted to protect his girlfriend and her friend from their sexual harassment, according to local media.

The attack took place outside an arena in Helsingborg on August of 2019 as the victim, a prominent 26-year-old soccer player, was leaving the premises with a friend and their girlfriends.

The females were walking roughly 40 feet in front of their boyfriends when they were approached by a group of four men, at least two of whom were identified as brothers from Afghanistan, Fria Tider reports.

The group began verbally and physically harassing the women, throwing a beach ball at them and grabbing at them.

“You’re going with us tonight,” the men demanded.

The victim, hearing the girls protesting against their aggressors, ran up and attempted to intervene on their behalf.

“When I got to the boys, they were four, which meant that I tried to be defensive due to the boys’ numerical superiority,” the victim explained during trial.

He says he asked the men to “please go,” and stressed he did not “want to quarrel.”

Three of the men then set upon the soccer player, while the fourth reportedly fled the scene.

“After a number of blows, I blacked out,” the victim said. “When I woke up, I was lying on the ground. I got a kick in the stomach and a very hard kick in the head, after which it turned black for me again.”

“The kicks resembled football kicks and were preceded by them taking a couple of meters running start.”

The three assailants, who all claim to be 22-years-old, have each been sentenced to only 18 months in prison and will not face deportation, despite at least once of them not yet holding Swedish citizenship.

The men are expected to serve no more than one year of their terms.
