The incident occurred in the New Castle county court building, Wilmington, at about 8:00 a.m. Monday, after the gunman fired shots after walking into the courthouse lobby, trying to breach the line of police officers, media reports said.
“I can confirm a shooting at 8 am. Two civilians, females, were killed, two capital officers were shot. The gunman is dead inside the lobby,” a police spokesman said.
The spokesman added that multiple shots were fired at the scene.
Mayor Dennis Williams said that the gunman shot and killed two women, including his wife, and he was then killed by police.
Reports also said that one of the women killed was the gunman’s wife.
The area around the courthouse was cordoned off by police, ambulances and fire trucks.
The shooting came as the police chief of Wilmington was scheduled to attend a discussion about gun safety in Philadelphia. Vice President Joe Biden, law enforcement officials and members of Congress were also expected to be there.
Delaware Governor Jack Markell released a statement over the deadly shooting, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers right now are with the victims of this senseless violence and the Capitol Police officers who put their lives on the line to protect the courts and public every day.”
