3 killed in Swiss factory shooting

The Wednesday incident occurred at around 9 a.m. local time (0800 GMT) at a wood processing company called Kronospan in the Swiss town of Menznau near the city of Lucerne, authorities said.

The area had been largely cordoned off after emergency services arrived on the scene.

Local officials said a rescue helicopter had flown four seriously wounded people to the hospital, but gave no further details on the extent of the damage.

The incident comes as a gunman killed three women and wounded two men in the Swiss village of Daillon last month, pushing lawmakers to consider revisions to the country’s firearm laws.

Swiss male citizens are allowed to retain their guns after mandatory military service, with citizens outside the military able to apply for a permit to purchase up to three weapons from the age of 18.

Switzerland lacks a national gun register but experts say that at least one in every three people owns a gun.

In 2001, a shooting in the regional parliament of Zug caused 14 deaths, prompting calls to reform laws. However, the majority of Swiss citizens rejected a proposal in 2011 for additional measures.
