Dear Rory;
If that is a serious suggestion, I must tell you it is a “political non-starter” for many reasons, mostly because, with all due respect, it’s a stupid idea.
I am not name-calling. You clearly care enough to comment, which is commendable. But your suggestion is just silly.
First, do you want to have an intelligent discussion on the subject?
Then let us please consider the obvious:
Guns are not going away. Period.
By today’s technology, they are low-tech. Anyone with a halfway decent machine shop can crank you out as many selective-fire stamped-frame OR milled-frame Kalashnikov AK’s as they care to.
NOBODY is going to wave a legislative magic wand and make guns go away.
Either we get used to that, or certain of us can continue to delude themselves.
Everybody has the right to defend themselves, man or woman.
The 2nd Amendment guarantees this right.
And we are compelled by our humanity to do whatever we can to defend our children.
Many people think that they are doing just that by calling for these ill-advised gun-ban legislation. They’re on a fools errand.
History has taught us again, and again, and again, that you can’t legislate anything out of existence, and we are wasting our time, or far worse, to try.
Speaking of protecting children, what is being widely proposed currently, makes about as much sense to me as trying to stamp out kiddie-porn by banning cameras.
You punish the criminal, you DO NOT punish everybody who owns the machinery. That’s horrendously bad public policy.
The only thing being suggested that makes any closely scrutinized sense, are universal background checks—as long as they are not weaponized by government officials who’s goal it is to disarm the population for no other reason than pacification.
I would urge you all to be very careful, careful, careful, what you are asking for here…..
